MOD TIPS #04 – Custom Enclosures for Box Mods

Custom EnclosureIf you have been following the box mod scene, you will notice that most modders use Hammond style project boxes for their enclosures.

These Hammond boxes are great for building box mods. They are durable, inexpensive, and easily attainable. There are, however, two issues that arises when using these as your box mod enclosure. The first issue is having all the screw holes on the outside of the enclosure. The second issue is the infamous “Hammond Lean.” I will go into more detail about these issues in just a moment.

Well recently I came across a custom CNC enclosure that was designed specifically for box mods. The custom enclosures eliminates all the issues you would have with your typical Hammond box. These new enclosures replicates the standard Hammond boxes such as the popular 1590g and 1590b enclosures.

Since these custom enclosures are CNC’d out of aluminum, the dimensions are slightly larger than your Hammond counterpart.

Closer Look at the 1590G

The custom enclosure has a measurement of 103mm x 52mm x 27mm, whereas the Hammond measures in at 100mm x 50mm x 25mm. So we are only dealing with a few millimeter differences with the custom enclosure. Personally for me, the benefits of the custom enclosure significantly outweighs the larger foot print.

Issues with Hammond Enclosures

Hammond LeanAs mentioned earlier, the two issues with Hammond enclosures is the screw hole placement and the “Hammond Lean”

On the Hammond boxes, the face plate lid is always held together with four screws.  Since these screws are on the outside of the enclosure, some of you may find it very displeasing to the eye. Most modders replace these screws with magnets.

Using magnets in place of the screws is very common occurrence and is pretty much standard in this industry of box mods. It allows you to remove the lid very easily and gives you access to the batteries held inside the enclosure.

As mentioned, this practice is very common and may not be such a big deal. The second issue of Hammond boxes is more substantial, and that’s the “Hammond Lean.”

All Hammond enclosures come with a slight slant to all the outside edges. What this means for you is that the box itself is not actually square.

So if you use these boxes as is, you will notice that your atomizers will sit at a slight angle when installed to your 510 connector. This lean will also make your box mod a little wobbly when sitting it down on a flat surface.

Custom Enclosure Fixes Issues

Hidden MagnetsThe face plate of the custom enclosure is designed with hidden magnets. This means that you can install your standard 1/4″ x 1/8” magnets on the INSIDE of the lid. With this design, you cannot see the magnets on the outside of the lid.

Having these hidden magnets on the lid will give you a very clean and flush looking box mod. Absolutely no screws or magnets can be seen from the outside of your enclosure.

These custom CNC enclosures eliminates the “Hammond Lean” as well. Since these enclosures were designed specifically for box mods, they are machined to be perfectly square. As you can see in the video, there is zero lean to these enclosures.

Taking it to the Next Level

If you want to take your box mod to the next level, these custom enclosures are definitely a good way to go. They will give your box mods a very custom and professional look that just cannot be achieved with your standard run of the mill Hammond enclosures.
